Team 25:40 Finishes

Marine Corps Marathon Fast & Strong

Forty-two of the final 48 runners of Team 25:40 ran the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 28, under clear, cool skies with a fast and strong finish. Team 25:40 ran for themselves and for individual children in South Africa suffering from the effects of AIDS and poverty.

Mike Smith, a first-time marathoner, placed first on Team 25:40, with the fastest finish of 3:11. That amazingly fast pace allowed him to finish 393 out of more than 20,000 runners of the Marine Corps Marathon.

Springfield, VA resident Andrea Kaltenbaugh placed second on Team 25:40 with a 3:19 finish, barely breezing by Erin Linthicum of Cambridge, Mass.

Fourth and fifth places go to Caitlin Glass of Charlottesville, VA with a first-marathon time of 3:29 and Andy Leinz of Burke, VA, who ran a 3:30.

Andy was one of Team 25:40’s top fund-raisers too – helping 25:40 raise more than $33,000 for the children in South Africa who are impacted by AIDS and poverty. Andy raised more than $1,300. The Glass Family (Caitlin, Brian & Ben) brought in the most donations with a total of $2,025.

The single largest fund-raiser was Sara Bowden of Vienna, VA who raised her original $1,000 fund-raising goal to $1,400 and still exceeded that goal, raising a total of $1,821!

Henry Brinton, pastor at Fairfax Presbyterian Church, raised $1,600 and wrote a great article for the November issue of the Washingtonian. 25:40 received more donations from Nestor Raul Anzola of Hattiesburg, MS, than any other runner. Raul persuaded 31 people that children in South Africa will directly benefit from Raul running the MCM.

The money raised by Team 25:40 will help pay for health care for children in mostly rural areas who have limited access to health care. The money also will help improve the schools and provide shelter and food to children in South Africa who have lost parents to AIDS or who may be HIV+

Thank you to all the runners – and the entire Team 25:40 and all those who sponsored a runner! You are helping the 1.2 million AIDS orphans in South Africa – one child at a time.

"I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
